How to choose an at-home RF device.
Ask these questions of any device you’re considering. Here’s how Sensilift™ and Sensifirm™ answer them.
Same goal, very different approaches.
They’re often sold side by side, but they work differently and have very different amounts of published research behind them. Sources are listed at the bottom of the page.
For your face
| LED | Microcurrent | At-home ultrasound | Sensilift™ radiofrequency | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How it works | Light at set wavelengths | A low-level electrical current | Sound waves | RF energy with dynamic movement |
| Mainly works on | Skin cells, through light | Facial muscles and the tissue beneath the skin | Varies by device | Deeper skin layers, through gentle warmth |
| Routine in published home studies | Twice a week to daily³ | 5 times a week³ | Not established for home use | Once a week, for 8 weeks¹ |
| Published home-use research | 4 studies in a 2024 systematic review, mostly small³ | 1 study in the same review³ | Research focuses on clinic HIFU, which uses far higher energy | 9 RF studies in the same review³, plus Sensilift’s own study¹ |
| What you feel | Varies by device | Varies by device | Varies by device | Gentle warmth and dynamic movement |
For your body
| Cellulite creams | Vacuum and suction devices | Ultrasonic cavitation | Sensifirm™ radiofrequency | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How it works | Ingredients such as caffeine or retinol, applied to the skin | Suction lifts and rolls the skin | Low-frequency sound waves aimed at fat cells | RF energy with vibration |
| Typical routine | Once or twice a day | Several times a week⁹ | Not established for home use | Once a week per area, for 8 weeks² |
| What research shows | Little evidence of an effect on cellulite⁶. Where small studies saw improvement, one found it lasted under 2 weeks⁷ | In a study of clinic suction treatment, cellulite appearance improved in 15% of women⁸ | Not among the approaches a 2024 systematic review rated most promising for cellulite⁵ | RF rated among the more promising approaches⁵. In Sensifirm’s own study, 93% improved after 8 weeks, rising to 100% at 3 months² |

The honest picture.
We’d rather you buy with clear expectations. Here’s a summary of peer-reviewed reviews, with full references at the bottom of the page.
Home devices
A 2024 review of 18 clinical studies found home RF, LED and microcurrent devices can improve signs of skin ageing to a degree, with only temporary redness reported. Most studies were small, with 12 weeks’ follow-up at most.³
Wrinkles
A systematic review of home-use dermatology devices recommended low-power radiofrequency for wrinkles.⁴
Cellulite
Cellulite is hard to treat, and nothing removes it permanently. A 2024 systematic review rated radiofrequency among the more promising approaches, with evidence of moderate quality.⁵ An earlier review found no treatment with clear evidence of strong results.⁶
Home vs clinic
Home devices use lower energy than clinic systems, so results build with consistent use over weeks.³ That’s why Sensica’s programme is 8 weekly sessions, followed by maintenance.
Simple to start, safe by design.
1. Patch test
Try a 3-minute test on each area 48 hours before your first full session, and find the energy level that suits you.
2. During a session
Expect gentle warmth and a little pink colour on the skin that fades soon after. Always use Sensica Base Gel.
3. Afterwards
Use SPF 30 or higher on treated skin, and skip very hot water and harsh products for 2 days.
Not suitable if you
are under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding, have a pacemaker or other active implant, or have had fillers, Botox or surgery in the area in the past 3 months. See the instructions for use for the full list.
Questions
Can I use one device on both my face and body?
No. Each is designed and tested for its own areas. Sensilift’s small treatment tip suits facial contours, while Sensifirm’s four electrodes cover larger body areas. If you’d like results on both, the RF Duo gives you both devices.
How long does a session take?
Sensilift takes 5 minutes per treatment area, so the full face and neck takes about an hour. You only need to treat the areas you want to improve. Sensifirm takes 20 minutes for an area about the size of two palms. Either way, it’s once a week.
Does it hurt?
It should feel like gentle warmth and a soft vibration. Temperature sensors switch RF off automatically if skin gets too warm, and no side effects were reported in either clinical study.
Do I need Base Gel?
Yes. Use Sensica Base Gel in every session, on every treatment area. When you need more, Base Gel is sold separately.
Does Sensilift need charging?
No. Sensilift plugs into the mains, so there’s no battery to charge before a session.
Is radiofrequency better than LED, microcurrent or ultrasound?
No study has compared them head to head, so we won’t claim that. They work differently: LED uses light, microcurrent works on muscles and at-home ultrasound uses sound waves, while radiofrequency warms the deeper layers of the skin. Radiofrequency has more published home-use studies than LED or microcurrent, and Sensica’s devices have their own clinical results, graded by specialists.
Will Sensifirm get rid of cellulite permanently?
No, and any device that claims to should be a red flag. Cellulite is structural, so results are an improvement in its appearance that you maintain with continued use.
How do I keep my results?
For your face, a maintenance session every 4 to 8 weeks. For your body, repeat the 8-week programme as needed.
Can men use Sensica devices?
Yes. Sensilift is designed for women and men, and men and women can use Sensifirm to firm and tighten the skin.
